Online promotions and giveaways are something many of us in Singapore take part in quite casually. It feels simple enough. Join a contest, try your luck, and sometimes receive a small reward even if we do not win the main prize.
This is a personal experience I had involving an Instagram contest and a promo code reward that started off straightforward but later became a bit confusing.
The Contest and the Reward
I participated in an Instagram contest. Like many others, I did not win the main prize. However, I was later given a promo code as a participation reward.
At that point, I appreciated the gesture. It felt like a small token for taking part, and I decided to try using it.
When Everything Worked Fine
When I first received and used the promo code around 5 May 2026 and on several occasions up to 12 May 2026, it worked consistently as a 10 dollar discount with no minimum spend requirement.
Everything matched what I experienced then, and there were no issues. The discount applied smoothly, and the terms seemed clear.
The Unexpected Change
However, things changed when I tried using the same promo code again on 13 May 2026.
This time, I noticed a change in the conditions. Instead of the earlier 10 dollar discount with no minimum spend, it now required a 50 dollar minimum spend.
What surprised me was not just the change itself, but the timing. The code had still been working under the earlier terms just one day before.
Some Confusion as a Customer
From a customer point of view, this created some uncertainty.
The promo code was still valid until 31 May 2026, so I took some time to browse and consider my purchase instead of rushing. I did not place an order immediately because I wanted to make a more thoughtful decision.
However, the change in terms during the validity period made it unclear which conditions applied and when exactly the update took effect.
Different Users, Different Experiences
It also felt like users who used the promo code earlier may have enjoyed better terms compared to those who used it later.
From a customer perspective, I also noticed that the promotion could fully offset the cost of certain low priced items. This might have influenced how the promotion was used overall and possibly led to higher than expected usage of the discount. I can only speculate on this, and I do not have any confirmation of the actual reason behind the change, so this is just my personal impression.
While I understand that promotional campaigns can be adjusted, it can still feel inconsistent when the same promo code behaves differently within its validity period.
My Decision
In the end, I chose not to proceed with the purchase. My main reason was the uncertainty over the applicable terms at the time I intended to use the promo code.
I prefer to be clear on conditions before completing any transaction.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I still appreciate the opportunity to take part in the contest and receive the promo code.
At the same time, I hope future campaigns can have clearer communication and more consistent terms throughout the promotion period. This would help customers in Singapore make decisions with more confidence and less confusion.
Even small improvements in clarity can make a real difference to the overall customer experience.
